The Tunkhannock Area girls cross country team picked up a win in the team’s season and home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 6, at a muddy and sloppy Wyoming County Fairgrounds.
The Lady Tigers won 15-50 over Wyoming Valley West, though lost 17-43 to Lake-Lehman.
Junior Madelyn Franko led the way for Tunkhannock, finishing fourth in 22:54, followed closely by freshman Jillian Landon in eighth (23:41) senior Emily Grow in ninth (24:18) and freshman Alison Edwards rounding out the top 10 (25:24).
Lake-Lehman’s Jade Fry won the girls race in 21:17, and her Black Knights teammates Jace Garnick (22:22) and Olivia Vasey (22:38) gave the team a 1-2-3 finish and a pair of team victories.
On the boys side, the Tigers were edged for two losses in Valley West, 24-31, and Lake-Lehman, 17-43.
Senior Ben Tidball was top finisher for Tunkhannock, taking sixth in 19:33. He was immediately followed by juniors Peter Sayre in seventh (19:44), Leighf Brown in eighth (19:48) and Noah Gruver shortly later in 13th (20:49).
Valley West’s Tavian McKenna won the race in 18:07 as his team picked up a pair of victories.
Spiked Shoe Invite
Tunkhannock got in an early season tune up at the Spiked Shoe Invitational Friday at Penn State University.
Brown finished 77th out of 219 runners in 18:54 to lead the Tigers.
Also for Tunkhannock, Sayre was 87th in 19:18; Tidball finished 105th in 20:11; Gruver was 110th in 20:26; junior Adam Hodge was 113th in 20:36; junior Alex Bushre placed 119th in 21:37; and freshman Nathan Myers was right behind in 120th in 21:42.
State College senior Mitchell Etter won the race in 15:51.
On the girls’ side, Franko placed 56th out of 177 runners in 22:47 to lead the Lady Tigers, followed by Edwards in 62nd at 23:06; Grow in 69th in 23:24; freshman Anna Brown in 104th in 26:21; and freshman Camryn Rogers in 106th in 26:52.
University senior TaShala Turner won the race in 18:01.
