The Tigertrons, Tunkhannock Area High School’s robotics team, are headed to the FIRST Robotics Championships in Detroit, Mich.
Team 222 returned Saturday following three days of intense competition at the FIRST Mid-Atlantic Region Championships at Lehigh University in Bethlehem.
After qualification rounds on the third day of competition with a record of 7-5, the Tigertrons were seeded seventh out of 60 other high school teams, securing a spot in the playoffs.
For playoff rounds, each of the top eight seeds must chose two additional teams to compete with as alliance partners. Although the Tigertrons could have remained one of the final eight team captains, they accepted an invitation to join the fourth seed, team 1923, the Midnight Inventors from West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North in Plainsboro Township, N.J., to form an alliance.
The alliance was completed by team 1403, Cougar Robotics from Montgomery High School in Skillman, N.J.
The alliance lost its first match of the quarter finals 88-74. They came back in match two with an 108-91 win to stay alive. In their must win third match, the Tigertrons along with their alliance partners made an outstanding show of skill and power culminating in a 93-43 victory.
In the semifinals, the alliance lost to the eventual event champions by scores of 95-90 and 99-96. Because of their impressive season, the Tigertrons earned 99 event points and 129 championship points totaling of 228 district points, ranking them 6th in Mid-Atlantic Region out of 128 teams.
This qualifies them for the FIRST Robotics Championships in Detroit, Mich., April 24-27.
