HAZLETON - In an unprecedented occurrence for a District 2 AA tournament, Wyoming County’s two high schools qualified 21 wrestlers this past weekend to advance in the march to Hershey, with 12 Lions and nine Tigers qualifying for the honor.
One Tiger, however, opted out of competing at regionals this coming weekend at Williamsport.
In the quarterfinals Friday, young Lackawanna Trail showed it could handle the spotlight of the district tournament as it advanced 14 wrestlers to the semifinals.
On Saturday, the Lions separated themselves from the competition in Class 2A.
Lackawanna Trail captured three District 2 individual championships and claimed the team title with 263.5 points, while Tunkhannock Area was second, but with four individual championships, and 221 overall points.
It was sweet revenge for the Lions to top the Tigers, the team they lost to at the district duals at Pittston three weeks earlier.
The Tigers still had plenty to celebrate.
David Evans was named District 2 AA Outstanding Wrestler and senior classmate Gavin D’Amato both captured their third D2 titles, and they did it in dominant fashion: Evans via two pins, and D’Amato with three falls and a major decision.
Frankie Scranta (195) and Nick Marabell (220) also took first place for the Tigers.
“Everybody is wrestling the best they ever have this season, which is a great time to peak out,” Lackawanna Trail’s Michael Bluhm, who claimed his second D2 title, said. “We’re just wrestling amazing, every single one of us.”
A pair of Trail freshmen also ended on top.
Freshman Deegan Ross (113) earned a takedown and pinned Hanover Area’s Cael Davis after they entered the third period tied at 4.
“He’s a real tough competitor,” Ross said. “I knew coming into it I had a good shot, but you never know.”
Freshman Ethan Lee (120) followed that up with a 1-0 decision over Hanover Area’s Joe Rowley.
“I’m at a loss for words,” Lee said. “First time, first year being a ninth grader and everything. It just feels great. We’ll see what happens from here.”
The Hawkeyes senior qualified for states last season, but that didn’t phase Lee.
“I’ve known I was probably going to meet him in the finals now for a little bit,” Lee said. “I just tried to watch a couple of his matches and see what I needed to do to win.”
Sophomore Bluhm held off Scranton Prep’s Antonio D’Apollonio for a 2-1 decision and his win.
“He was a tough competitor,” Bluhm said. “He’s really strong so I tried to get to my ties.”
Lackawanna Trail’s Max Bluhm (106), Robbie Schneider (126), Dalten Klinges (138), Seth Ross (145), Kody Cresswell (152), Tyler Rozanski (160), Mason Zajac (170), Jonah Houser (182) and Mark Dunckle (195) also qualified for regionals.
Tunkhannock will send Evans (the region’s lone No. 1 seed at 126), Owen Woods (106), Ethan Muley (138), D’Amato (145), Luke Carpenter (160), Jeff Meader (182), Scranta (195), and Marabell (220).
Tiger Brett Sickler, took second at 285 pounds, but opted out of regional competition.
The quarterfinals begin Friday at 6 p.m. at Williamsport High School and continue Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the semifinals, finals and consolation rounds.
