Abby Ritz was named MVP for her team after scoring 10 points, all in the second half, in a winning effort. From left, Tony Modrovsky, WVAA; Phil Latinski, WVAA; Ritz; John Leighton, WVAA; Jack Bonczewski, WVAA.

Tunkhannock’s Abby Ritz earned the MVP trophy for Team Healey in a 10-point effort as Team Healey defeated Team Wolfpack, 74-68, in the 50th annual Dr. George P. Moses Wyoming Valley Conference Senior All-Star Classic on Friday night at Holy Redeemer.

“I honestly didn’t expect this. I was literally just playing my own game for my last time, and I did what I could,” Ritz said.

Redeemer senior Julia Andrejko’s 3-pointer brought her bench to its feet in excitement. Her only bucket of the night — outside of halftime — dropped when it counted to seal the win.

Andrejko took home her own hardware during halftime, when she edged GAR’s Oliva Prato, 7-6, in a 3-point shootout final that went down to Prato’s final moneyball. Later, her trey gave Team Healey a 71-66 lead with time winding down; Tunkhannock’s Annaliese Verbeek then buried another 3 for an eight-point lead with 1:30 remaining.

As both sides battled for the lead late, the game shifted more and more from a pickup atmosphere to typical high school intensity.

Ritz, who scored all 10 of her points in the second half on the way to MVP honors, didn’t take the night lightly, either, and said she was cheering from the bench all game.

It was an extra chance for Andrejko, Ritz and the rest of the night’s seniors to come together and play the game they love.

Ritz started playing around second grade and hopes she can continue as she transitions to studying at IUP.

“Basketball’s a really big thing to me. ... I really don’t want to give (it) up,” she said. “I’d play the rest of my life if I can.”

If this is it, they and other seniors went out in style.

Other teammates who scored Friday included Verbeek with seven and Rebecca Avery with two.
