If there was any uncertainty that the Tunkhannock Area wrestling team was out to make a statement this season, Saturday’s performance in the Sheetz Holiday Class at Mount Aloysius College certainly put many of those doubts to rest.

In a tournament featuring several dozen potential state qualifiers, the Tigers accounted for seven places in the top five en route to winning the team title over a field of 35 squads.

Tunkhannock finished the day with 174 points, which edged out St. Marys by three and third place Mount Union by 22 points in the tournament hosted by Penn Cambria High School.

Hazleton, which tied for third with Tunkhannock in the Wyoming Valley Conference Tournament and finished one spot ahead of the Tigers in the District 2 Class AAA Championships last year, finished fifth.

Senior Dakota Quick (132) and sophomore Sam Rice (195) led the way for the Tigers with second place finishes and just one loss in five bouts.

Quick also made some history along the way, setting the new Tunkhannock school record for most career falls with 60, which broke the previous 33-year-old record of 59 falls set by Bob Farber in 1992.

He cruised through the first three rounds by pinning each opponent in under two minutes before picking up a pin in the semifinals to reach the championship bout.

Rice also won by fall in his first three matches before losing a close 9-7 decision in the finals.

Seniors Dalton Ray (170) and Mike Manley (160) and freshman Tommy Traver (126) ended the day with third place finishes and only one loss.

Ray picked up wins by pin and two major decision before losing in a 4-3 decision in the semifinals. He responded, however, with another major decision in the consolation semifinals before winning a 6-4 decision in the third place bout.

Manley opened the tournament with a pin and a decision before losing in a 5-0 decision in the quarters and having to battle back with three wins and a 9-3 decision for third place.

A fall, technical fall and major decision sent Traver to the semifinals before getting pinned, but he answered by picking up falls in the next two bouts for third place.

Seniors Jake Richards (138) and Bill Manley (152) rounded out the notable performances for Tunkhannock with fifth place finishes and 4-2 records on the day.

Tunkhannock will now prepare to host Berwick on Wednesday, Dec. 23, on what will also be the school’s Alumni Night, as one final tune up before hosting the annual Tunkhannock Kiwanis Tournament Dec. 29-30.

Some more history could possibly be made in those events, as Quick sits just two wins away from 100 career victories. Bill Manley is also on the cusp of the same milestone and currently at 96 careers wins.
